The Common Service

Immanuel is a liturgical congregation which makes use of the Common Service found on Page 184 of the Lutheran Service Book. We utilize this liturgy almost exclusively in our Sunday morning services. Our service is known as the "Common Service" because it is the unifying service of English speaking Lutheranism. The Common Service is the worship service of Old Lutheranism brought into the English language. It contains the ancient Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria in Excelsis, Creed, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) which flow out of the Scriptures and were used by the early Christians. In the older Lutheran Hymnal of 1941 it was found on page fifteen. The Common Service, now found on page 184, is the strongest setting of the Divine Service contained in our current hymnal. This wonderful treasure of our Church is objectively beautiful and powerfully conveys the Word of God to all generations.

Lectionary

A lectionary is the series of Bible readings a church listens to in its worship services. Immanuel follows the one-year, historic lectionary of the western church. Our lectionary is known as the historic lectionary because it has been largely unchanged for 1,500 or more years.

You are invited

We welcome you to visit us for worship. At church, we hear God's Law and Gospel, receive the forgiveness of sins, and return praise to God by faithfully singing and speaking His Word.

Closed Communion

Immanuel follows the Biblical practice of celebrating closed Communion. Those who are united with our congregations in matters of doctrine are invited to receive the life-giving body and blood of Jesus in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of their sins.

If you have not communed at Immanuel recently, please speak with the pastor before receiving the Sacrament. If you are not yet a part of our fellowship, we encourage you to join us for worship.

Please join us to sing the hymns and participate in the service, but please refrain from approaching the altar rail during the distribution of the Sacrament.

How to Join Us

Hymn board displaying worship hymn numbers at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

At the front of the church, two hymn-boards provide the information necessary to follow along with each service. (This information is also printed in the bulletin.) The number at the top of the board is the opening hymn which is sung following the ringing of the bells.

The second page number on the board is the order of service which we will follow. The hymns and order of service are found in the red colored hymnal present in each pew. The ribbons in the hymnal may assist you in marking the pages in the hymnal. If you get lost, feel free to ask someone sitting near you for assistance.

You are welcome to join us for worship regardless of your clothing. Many of our members choose to wear dress clothes to church in order to show respect for God who is present with us in the Divine Service.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
